The Rose Purse™, Narcissa, vacillaties in and out of a daydream, admiring her reflection in the river. Each day, she ponders. The branch of a rose tree in pure white, a symbol of her naïveté and idyllic nature, tinged with a hint of innocence, points its thin twigs towards her slender frame. White roses, purity incarnate, linger along the sandy shoreline, delicately grazing the water’s edge with their satin sheen. Two glass vessels stand, as though frozen, next to her. They are half-filled.

Narcissa reflects. Gazing. Admiring. There is no longing. No yearning. Echoing a refrain of restraint and compose in her shroud of self-absorption is a staunch admonishing, though well beneath the surface. Self-important. Pompous poseur. Days turn to evenings. The evenings to nighttime. Nighttime, darkness. Each day, her hauteur grows stronger. She reflects a little longer. It is not the quiet waves that draw her in, but her own image.

Roses fade from white to black. Narcissa slips in and our of her daytime dreamscape into an abyss, her damaged ego bent, the grandiosity which drove her to look in the glassy mirror with such glowing regard, diminished; her journey of conceit and vanity tarnished, marred by hubris. Shriveling and dying into herself, Narcissa clings to her likeness, arms held out to the water in a hopeful embrace, grasping desperately at the calm waves. Turning its tide, her reflection, unyielding, pulls her into its tumultuous depths, the darkness beckons her asunder. Narcissa’s reflection, shattered, her ego destroyed. Narcissa is lost forever.
